WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is back in a federal government role.
Noem has been named a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. According to a source familiar with the appointment, she will continue work with “The Shield of the Americas,” a coalition focused on combating drug cartels throughout the Western Hemisphere.
Noem previously served as a special envoy for the initiative, but that designation expired last month.
The appointment comes several months after President Donald Trump removed Noem from her position as Secretary of Homeland Security in March. Despite that move, Trump has publicly praised Noem’s work with The Shield of the Americas and her efforts to strengthen regional cooperation against organized crime and drug trafficking.
Noem’s new State Department role keeps her involved in international security and anti-cartel initiatives.
