DEADWOOD, S.D. – Residents of Lawrence County and the City of Lead can once again conduct open burning after local officials lifted their burn bans this week.
The Lawrence County Commission has rescinded the burn ban that had been in place since July 30th, while the Lead City Commission voted to end its temporary burn ban on October 19th.
However, officials stress that not all fire restrictions have been lifted. The Black Hills National Forest remains under Stage 1 fire restrictions, meaning campfires are only allowed in designated fire rings or grills at approved recreation sites. Fireworks also remain prohibited on National Forest lands and within the Black Hills Fire Protection District.
In addition, separate burn regulations remain in effect in some areas of Lawrence County, particularly north of Interstate 90.
Officials are encouraging residents to check current restrictions before burning, follow all local ordinances, and use caution with any outdoor fires. They also remind the public never to leave a fire unattended and to ensure it is fully extinguished before leaving the area.
