RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City police are investigating a homicide after a man died from injuries sustained in a shooting early Tuesday morning.
Officers were dispatched shortly before 1 a.m. to a residence in the 1500 block of Kellogg Place, where they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency aid was provided at the scene before the victim was transported to a hospital, where he later died. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
Investigators say witness statements and evidence from the scene indicated a blue Chevrolet pickup fled the area immediately after the shooting.
About 50 minutes later, a Pennington County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a blue Chevrolet pickup speeding on Elk Vale Road. The driver refused to stop, leading law enforcement on a pursuit that ended near Highway 44 and Lonetree Road. Two occupants then fled on foot but were later located and detained.
Authorities recovered several firearms connected to the vehicle and its occupants. Investigators are still working to determine the identity of the shooting suspect.
The Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office are jointly investigating the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Rapid City Police or submit an anonymous tip through the department’s text-a-tip service.
