RAPID CITY, S.D. – AAA and local law enforcement are urging drivers to use extra caution this Halloween weekend as trick-or-treating, impaired driving, and the end of daylight saving time create what officials are calling a “triple threat” on the roads.
With Halloween falling on Saturday and clocks turning back an hour on Sunday, drivers can expect more pedestrians, more impaired drivers, and more fatigue-related driving risks.
AAA South Dakota says motorists should be especially alert for children who may unexpectedly enter roadways while trick-or-treating. Parents are also encouraged to review safety rules with their children and ensure they stay out of traffic and use crosswalks whenever possible.
Officials note that darkness will arrive before many trick-or-treaters are finished, making visibility a concern. Reflective clothing, flashlights, and glow items can help children remain visible to drivers.
The Rapid City Police Department says officers will be actively watching for impaired drivers throughout the Halloween holiday and reminds anyone planning to drink to arrange a sober ride home through a designated driver, friend, or rideshare service.
AAA also warns that the effects of the time change may linger into next week as drivers adjust to darker evening commutes and changing daylight conditions. Officials say a little extra caution behind the wheel can help keep everyone safe during the busy Halloween weekend.
