SPEARFISH, S.D. – Drivers traveling through Spearfish should prepare for new traffic patterns beginning Monday as the final phase of a one-point-three million dollar intersection improvement project gets underway at Interstate 90’s Exit 10.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation says a new paved U-turn area, known as a “loon,” will open to provide drivers with a safer place to turn around near the interchange.
Construction crews will also begin work on a new median and turn lane along North Avenue. As a result, left turns from Old Highway 14 will be restricted, and northbound drivers on North Avenue will not be able to turn left onto Old Highway 14 during construction.
Motorists needing access to Old Highway 14 are encouraged to use Exit 8 as an alternate route. All Interstate 90 entrance and exit ramps at Exit 10 will remain open.
Additional improvements include new traffic signals planned for the eastbound off-ramp and North Avenue, with installation expected in January.
The project is being completed by Tru-Form Construction of Black Hawk and is scheduled to wrap up by November 20th. Drivers are reminded to slow down and watch for changing traffic patterns in the construction zone.
