Spartan Football Camp
The 2013 Spearfish Spartan Football Camp is coming up in July. Camp for students in grades 3-8 will be July 22-25. Grades 3-5 will meet from 2:00-4:00 p.m. while grades 6-8 will have camp from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The Spartan Football Camp for high school students in grades 9-12 will run July 29-31 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. each evening.

Tyhurst Named New Spartan Boys Basketball Coach
Spearfish High School has offered the Head Boys' Basketball coaching position to Mr. Adam Tyhurst. Coach Tyhurst is currently a lower level coach for the Yankton Bucks and previously coached at Eastern Oregon University and Dakota Wesleyan University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Master of Arts in both Educational Policy and Administration and Teaching. He will also be teaching math at Spearfish High School.
Coach Tyhurst will take over the coaching duties from Erik Skoglund who will become the head boys' basketball coach in Mitchell. The Spearfish High School administration felt fortunate to have had a number of qualified applicants for this position, and feel that Coach Tyhurst will best fit into their program both athletically and academically.

Kaitfors Signs With Mount Marty
Spearfish Post 164 Centerfielder Mason Kaitfors becomes the third player to sign his national letter of intent to play baseball in college. Mason will play for Coach Andy Bernatow at Mount Marty in Yankton, South Dakota. The Lancers play in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Lancers have won a GPAC conference tournament and regular season title in the last four years.

Brandon Kemp To Play Baseball In Miles City
Spearfish's Brandon Kemp has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Miles City Community College in Miles City, Montana.
Kemp, an all-state selection in basketball this season for the Spartans, was also a standout on the football field as a quarterback and defensive back.

Bacon and Garcia Sign With DWU Soccer Team
Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer coach Jeremy Tosaya pushed his recruiting total to 11 when he announced the addition of Spearfish standouts Blaine Bacon and Erick Garcia to the Tigers' 2013 roster.
Bacon is a 6-foot defender who started and lettered three years for the Spartans. He was named the team's defender of the year as a junior and senior and helped the team to a 15-2 record and a runner-up finish at the state tournament as a senior. He earned Class AA second-team all state honors and was named to the Elite 11.
Garcia is a 5-11 midfielder who earned three varsity letters at Spearfish and also played for the South Dakota United club team with Bacon.

2013 SHS Athletic Hall of Fame Announced
Spearfish High School will induct the Class of 2013 into the Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime of the Spearfish Vs. Custer boys' basketball game on Friday, February 22, 2013. Being inducted are former football, basketball and track stand-outs Jeff Loescher (Class of '82) and Tanner Tetrault (Class of 2003).
Loescher was a 3-year starter on the boys basketball team ('80-'82) but made his biggest impact in track and field. He was a 3-time State AA high jump champion and held the state high jump record from 1981-1986. He held the school long jump record from 1981-1994 and still holds the school high jump record. Jeff is a 4-year letter winner for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and has held UNL records in the decathlon and indoor high jump. He currently lives in Missouri.
Tetrault was a three-sport standout for the Spartans. He was named to the Argus Leader Elite 45 football team in 2002 and first-team All-Greater Dakota Conference. Tanner was part of the 2002 "AA" state championship basketball team and a state track qualifier. He went on to become a successful college football player earning All-American status in 2006 and 2007. Tanner ended his playing career playing arena league football for two years. He lives in Spearfish.

Spartans Name New Volleyball Coach
Jayna Morrill has been named the new varsity head volleyball coach at Spearfish High School.
Morrill, 23, succeeds Susanna Feiro, who stepped down after two seasons.
Morrill played college volleyball at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, where she was a middle hitter. She was named the team's Most Improved Player as a freshman and started for the next three years. Morrill graduated from DWU in 2010 with a major in history education and a minor in coaching.

Lappe Named Head Girls Basketball Coach At Spearfish High School
Mr. Eric Lappe has accepted the Language Arts and Head Girls Basketball coaching position at Spearfish High School. Formal approval will be granted by the Spearfish Board of Education at the May 14 regular scheduled meeting.
Mr. Lappe is currently teaching in the Wilmot School District while also serving as the head Boys Basketball coach. Lappe has taught both Language Arts and History at Wilmot since 1999. He served as the Head Girls Basketball coach from 2000-2007 and the Head Boys Basketball coach from 2007-2012. He has recorded 105 varsity victories during that time with experience in several district championship games. Lappe's 2007 team captured the Eastern Coteau Conference Championship.
Lappe received his Bachelor's degree from Mount Marty College in Yankton, participating 4 years for the Lancers Men's Basketball program. Prior to his college playing career, Lappe was named the Most Valuable Player during the 1992 SDHSAA state championships while playing for the Class B state champion Harold Cardinals. Lappe was the co-recipient of the 1992 South Dakota Mr. Basketball award along with Lance Luitjens of Custer.

High School Wrestling: Bison Lead BHC Selections
Hot Springs led all Black Hills Conference wrestling teams with four all-conference selections.
State champion Brady Harkless, Jacob DeSersa, Jared Harkless and Justin Harkless were the Bison representatives on the team.
Spearfish-Lead-Deadwood was led by state champion Nate Rotert, Reece Norton and Rance Sivertsen.
Douglas put Alan Heidinger, Tyler Abbott and Josh Hunt on the team, while Custer was represented by Dylan Severyn, Tanner Eiesland and Clayton Wahlstrom.
St. Thomas More put both Witt Dobesh and Anthony Skaleski on the team, while Hill City's Marshall Swanson was also selected.
Six wrestlers repeated as all-BHC selections.

Spearfish High School is proud to announce the selection of a former stand-out athlete for induction into the Spearfish High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Jaime Bentley, Class of 2002, was a basketball and golf athlete for the Spartans. She followed her high school career by attending the University of Louisville and Black Hills State University. Jaime will be inducted during halftime of the Spearfish Vs. Rapid City Central boys' basketball game on Friday, February 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the public is encouraged to attend.

Spearfish Spartan Football Camp
The 2011 Spearfish Spartan Football Camp will be held July 25-27 at the Spearfish High School Practice Fields. Participants will learn how to pass, catch, punt, kick and play football. Football camp players will get instruction in the fundamentals of the game by the Spearfish Spartan coaching staff and the Spearfish Spartan players.
Grades 3-5 will meet from 8:00-10:00 a.m. Grades 6-8 will have camp from 10:00-12:00 p.m. and campers in high school (Grades 9-12) will meet from 6:00-8:30 p.m.
Cost of the camp is $40 for grades 3-8 and $50 for grades 9-12. Be sure to call for discounts for families with more than one participant. The registration fee includes three days of offensive, defensive and special teams instruction of fundamentals as well as team play by the Spartan players and football staff. Also included is a camp t-shirt and various prizes. You can bring the registration form and fee to the opening day of camp.

Spearfish AAU Wrestling Registration
Spearfish AAU Wrestling Registration will be held November 11 at the Spearfish High School Wrestling Room from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
The registration fee is $45 per wrestler. A deposit of $65 per singlet and $10 per headgear will be collected in a seperate check (than registration money) and returned to the parent at the end of the season when the gear is turned back in.
First-time wrestlers will need to bring their birth certificate when they come to registration.

Spartan Basketball Invitational
The Spearfish Spartan Basketball Invitational fundraiser for grades five through eight, will be held November 6 and 13, at the Spearfish High School Gym, Auxiliary Gym and the Spearfish Middle School Gym.
It will be an eight team tournament format, and all teams will play three games.
Seventh and eighth graders will play on Saturday, November 6, and fifth and sixth graders will play on Saturday, November 13. Games start at 8 a.m. and finish at 4 p.m. The cost is $200 per team.

Spearfish Athletic Hall Of Fame Nominations
The deadline for the 2010 nominations to the Spearfish Athletic Hall Of Fame is Friday, December 10. The purpose of the Hall Of Fame is to recognize men and women who have excelled through athletic participation, coaching, or contributions to the Spearfish High School athletic program. Nominees must have graduated in the Class of 2005 or before.
Nomination forms for eligible candidates are available at the High School Activities office, can be requested by calling 714-1206 or by CLICKING HERE.

Skoglund New Boys Basketball Coach In Spearfish
Erik Skoglund is the new boy's basketball coach at Spearfish High School.
Skoglund, a graduate of Howard High School and the University of Sioux Falls, spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach under Lady Yellow Jackets head coach Mark Nore.
Prior to that, he spent five years as head girl's basketball coach at McCook Central in Salem.
Skoglund replaces Dan Martin, who resigned after eight seasons as Spartans coach, to take a principal's job in Wyoming.
Skoglund said he is thrilled about being the head basketball coach at Spearfish.
