BHSU Cross Country Ready For Another Season

By John Kietzmann
Black Hills State Athletics

The Black Hills State University women's cross country team is ranked tenth in the NAIA preseason poll. The men's cross country team is not in the top 25, but is receiving votes.

"Our women's team will be very strong again this year," said head coach Scott Walkinshaw. "There is no doubt that losing a student-athlete like Wendy O'Lexey will hurt us, but I think the kids that we have coming in are skilled athletes and are up to the challenge."

Last season, the Black Hills State women's team finished tenth at the NAIA National Championship Meet. The men's team did not qualify as a team for the national championship in 2009, but did finish No. 25 in the final poll.

Walkinshaw said, "On the men's side last season, we didn't get to the national meet as a team. The team is focused and wants to get back there this year."

Black Hills State opens the season on Saturday, September 4 in Billings, Montana for a triangular meet against Montana State-Northern and Rocky Mountain College.

ABERDEEN 3, SPEARFISH 0: The Aberdeen Central volleyball team shed its first-match jitters and took a couple of big steps forward in the second match of the young season.

The Golden Eagles improved to 2-0 with a 25-16, 25-8, 25-11 nonconference win over Spearfish on Saturday in high school volleyball at Golden Eagles Arena.

The Eagles opened the match with kills by Kayla Schaunaman and Britini Haar, and two ace serves by Kelcy Schaunaman. The Spartans (0-2 overall) inched back to within 9-8 on four consecutive attacking errors by Aberdeen. Central coach Dennis Northrup called a timeout and his team responded by outscoring Spearfish 12-2.

Spearfish’s Amy Deichert finished with eight assists and two aces to lead the way.

The Spartans stay on the road with matches on Friday at Sioux Falls Lincoln and Saturday at Sioux Falls Washington.

LEAD-DEADWOOD 3, HARDING CO. 2: Lead-Deadwood made new head coach Erica Anshutz a winner in her first match as it downed Harding County 22-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-9 on Saturday.

Jill Lundquist led the Golddigger attack with 12 kills, four blocks and three aces, while Jojo Wiseman had nine kills and three blocks. Chelsey Cate dished out 36 assists and tied for the team lead with three aces.

The Golddiggers are back in action Tuesday when they travel to face Custer.

MITCHELL 3, STURGIS 0: Mitchell downed Sturgis 25-9, 26-24, 25-18 in a volleyball match in Mitchell on Saturday. The Scoopers lost to Aberdeen Central on Friday and dropped to 0-2 on the year.

Sturgis will host GDC rival Spearfish on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

College Volleyball

BLACK HILLS STATE ON THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK: The Black Hills State volleyball team got 13 kills and 13 digs from Maggie O’Neill to power past Briar Cliff 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 on Saturday during the Red Raider Classic in Orange City, Iowa.

Brittani Casados led BHSU with 15 digs, while Tori Lounsbery added 10 and handed out 29 assists in the win over Briar Cliff.

Black Hills State completed the sweep with a come from behind 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12 win over Dakota Wesleyan in the two-day tournament.

BHSU has now won three games in a row to improve to 3-6 on the season.

SPEARFISH 5, WATERTOWN 1: Ryan Tollefsrud continued his strong start to the season, netting two more goals Saturday as Spearfish ran away from Watertown 5-1 in Spearfish.

The Arrows took the initial lead 10 minutes into the game, but from there on it was all Spearfish. Tollefsrud and Nicolas Kuhnke, a German transfer student, both scored first-half goals to answer the early Watertown strike.

“That was probably the biggest thing. (Watertown) scored in the first three minutes, and it was a pretty good wake-up call for the team,” Spearfish head coach Jim Hill said.

Rather than letting its guard down in the second half, Spearfish kept its foot on the gas, getting goals from Derek Deise, Leo Rodriguez and another from Tollefsrud in the opening minutes of the half to put the game away for the Spartans (2-0 overall). The offensive showing gave their head coach a glimpse of winning attitude that is starting to develop, particularly with his seniors.

Spearfish will take the field on Friday against Brookings at home at 8 p.m.

STURGIS 1, VERMILLION 1: The Sturgis boys got a late penalty kick from Logan Behnke to tie Vermillion 1-all on Saturday.

The Scoopers capitalized on a man-advantage after a Vermillion player was given a red card in the second half, but Sturgis head coach Jon Palmer thought his team could have done more.

“We should have done better,” Palmer said. “They went down a man and we were trying to play the long ball like them instead of playing the short passing game.”

The Scoopers are now 0-1-1 on the season.

Girls High School Soccer

SPEARFISH 6, WATERTOWN 0: It may have been the first game of the season for the Spearfish girls soccer team, but the Spartans looked in midseason form.

Spearfish got a hat trick from Jordan Post and goals from Whitney Leonard, Kelsey Lamb and Britain Burditt in a 6-0 rout of Watertown on Saturday.

“It was a good game for us,” Spearfish head coach Charlie Lamb said. “It was a good way to open the season.”

Spearfish, which led 3-0 at halftime, limited the Arrows to just two shots on goal.

“We had some things we wanted to work on,” Lamb said. “The girls worked hard all over the field. It was just a great way to get going, lots of work to do but we looked all right.”

Spearfish (1-0) will host Rapid City Stevens in a non-points matchup on Tuesday.

STURGIS 2, VERMILLION 1: Sturgis’ Breanne Kuehler broke a tie game, scoring in the second half to lift the Scoopers to a 2-1 win over Vermillion on Saturday in high school girls soccer action.

The win was the first of the season for Sturgis and improved the Scoopers to 1-1-1 on the season.

Kuehler’s goal came on an assist from Karli Wilson.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Sturgis head coach Dick Long said. “It was pretty much anybody’s game at halftime.”

Sturgis goalie Ericka Porter got the win, making 15 saves on 16 shots.

Amber Sieveke got Sturgis’ first goal, taking a pass from Ashley Rennie to give the Scoopers the early lead.

Sturgis returns to action on Thursday, hosting Belle Fourche.

College Football: BHSU Picked To Finish Third In DAC

Defending conference co-champions Dickinson State and Minot State sit first and second in the Dakota Athletic Conference Preseason Football Coaches' Poll.

The Blue Hawks received five first-place votes to edge the Beavers out for the top spot. Minot State picked up the other three first-place ballots.

Black Hills State placed third in the poll, followed by Jamestown College, South Dakota School of Mines, Valley City State, Dakota State and Mayville State.

The Yellow Jackets finished tied with Jamestown for third place in the conference a season ago, posting a 6-4 record overall. Black Hills State does return the reining conference player of the year in defensive end Wacey Coleman to go along with an experienced defense around him.

This is the last season the DAC will operate as an eight-team conference with both Black Hills State and Mines in the process of moving to NCAA Division II, and Dakota State has made the decision to become a NAIA independent following the season.

The poll was conducted by the Dakota Athletic Conference.

Yellow Jacket Football Set To Kick-Off 2010 Campaign

By John Kietzmann
Black Hills State Athletics

The Black Hills State University football team is making its final preparations before the season opener against Grand View this Saturday, August 28.

“Our goal is to win the conference and go back to the NAIA playoffs again,” said senior linebacker Forest Sainsbury. “Coach Long expects a lot out of us. He recruited some of us when he was an assistant. I know that he wants us to be successful this year.”

The Yellow Jackets currently have a 93-man roster with only 10 seniors on the team.

“We have a very young team this year,” said head coach Jay Long. “We have 76 players on the roster that are sophomores or younger.”

Even with all the youth on the team, the senior leadership will play a critical role if the success of the season. The offense will be directed by senior quarterback Drew Hodgs. Hodgs split time as the starter last season with fellow senior Zac Zandstra. In 2009, Hodgs threw for 1,244 yards and 10 touchdowns. Zandstra threw for 381 yards and three touchdowns.

Long said, “This past off-season was good for Drew and Zac. They pushed each other and challenged each other to get better. After completing the off-season we have confidence in both senior quarterbacks. Drew will get the starting nod against Grand View. However, it is a good feeling to know that we have two senior quarterbacks that can lead the team.”

The defense will be led by returning Dakota Athletic Conference Player of the Year Wacey Coleman. Coleman tallied nine sacks in 2009. Backing up Coleman are senior linebackers Sainsbury and Richard Fairhead. Sainsbury and Fairhead combined for 136 total tackles last season. The Yellow Jackets ended the season ranked No. 4 in the NAIA in total defense allowing 252 yards per game.

“The defense is gelling together,” said Sainsbury. “For us, it is all about flying around and being nasty.”

The Yellow Jackets will open the season on Sat., Aug. 28, at Grand View in Des Moines, Iowa. Game time for the season opener is scheduled at 12 p.m. MST. You can catch all the action beginning at 11:30 a.m. with the pre-game show followed by the kick-off at noon. Cody Oliver will have all of the play-by-play.

Rodeo: Cole Elshere Holds Off Loaded Field For Win

By Joe Kavanaugh
Rapid City Journal

One of a new generation of South Dakota saddle bronc riders made the biggest splash Saturday night as the 88th annual Days of ’76 rodeo closed the chutes for the final time before a near-capacity crowd.

Despite a field featuring three former South Dakota world champion saddle bronc riders —Jeff Willert, Chad Ferley and five-time world champion and legendary cowboy Billy Etbauer — Cole Elshere, one of South Dakota’s new breed of bronc busters, stood atop the pack when the dust finally settled. His 87-point ride late in the round nipped Chad Ferley by a single point.

“I’ve seen the horse for probably five years,” said Elshere, a first cousin to NFR saddle-bronc qualifier J.J. Elshere and the 2009 Badlands Circuit saddle bronc champion.

“I’ve liked him ever since I started bronc riding,” Cole said. “He’s kind of a horse you dream about I guess, and when I drew him I was really excited. I rode in Burwell, Neb., last night and didn’t do any good, but this really makes up for it.”

South Dakota cowboys swept the bronc-riding events as Dustin Reeves of Owanka, a veteran Badland Circuit bareback rider, posted an 83-point romp-bustin’ bareback ride Saturday afternoon to claim the bareback title. Reeves nipped the 82-point effort of Rapid City’s Scott Montague, a close friend and occasional traveling partner.

Reeves’ score was originally posted as an 82-point ride and did not know he had been elevated into the lead until he returned for the evening performance.

“I walked back later after the afternoon performance just to see what they had tonight and found out that I was leading the event,” Reeves said. “To win at Deadwood is pretty cool. I really didn’t think the score would hold up, but they kept the scores pretty moderate here this year.

“I knew that I had a pretty decent horse and to be in Deadwood and compete against a lot of guys, you really have to flash it up and have a good bucking horse to help you.”

One former world champion who did step to the fore on Saturday was two-time world champion Brittany Pozzi out of Victoria, Texas. Pozzi, currently ranked No. 2 in the world made her way to the top of the leaderboard with a lightning-quick 16.53-second run. Pozzi’s toughest trip of the day may have been the one that got her to Deadwood.

“We had a hard night last night,” Pozzi said as she tended to her horse, Duke, following the winning run. “We drove all night and just got here a couple of hours before the rodeo started, so I was a little worried that my horse wasn’t going to fire just because he might be a little tired, but he sure didn’t show it today.”

In rodeo’s classic closing event, bull riding, a top pen of bulls for the most part proved a little too tough for the intrepid group of bull riders.

Moundville, Mo., cowboy Dusty Elkinton did chalk up an 85-point ride, good enough for second in the rodeo average behind event-winner Chad Everett Denton’s 88-point Thursday ride.

Local Sports
South Dakota Cowboys Seek To Improve During Weekend Events

By Joe Kavanaugh
Rapid City Journal

Rough stock rodeo made its first appearance at the Days of ’76 rodeo on Thursday night. And as usual, when cowboys contest a rough stock event — bareback, saddle bronc or bull riding — chances are pretty good a South Dakota cowboy will end up somewhere near the top.

The first performance was no exception, as Rapid City’s own Scott Montague turned a bumpy eight-second ride into 82 points and top money in the first go-round.

“I did OK, though I should have got a little more out of the horse,” a somewhat dispirited Montague said, despite his winning effort. “This is such a tough rodeo, and while an 82 may be catching a check, (for it) to win the rodeo would be on a wing and a prayer, I’m afraid.

“Unfortunately, I need any little dollar I can pick up, so it’s nice to win. But I need some big things to happen here in the next couple of weeks, or just say ‘To heck with it’ and try again next year.”

Thursday night was not so kind to South Dakota saddle bronc riders, however. One of South Dakota’s best, Camp Crook’s Jesse Bail, did scrape together a 77-point ride. The run was good enough for second, behind a 78 by Canadian bronc rider Todd Herzog.

“I actually got a little better horse than I expected, but right there at the end he kind of whirled there, and that hurt my points pretty good,” Bail said while strapping on gear for a bull ride later in the evening. “I felt like I had a pretty good ride, did what I could, and just need to move on to the next one.”

Most of the big names in South Dakota saddle bronc circles will appear tonight and Saturday night. Among them will be 2005 world champ Jeff Willert, who currently is fifth in this year’s standings.

“I’ve been going to Deadwood since 2002,” said Willert from his home near Belvidere. “It’s been a pretty good rodeo for me (Willert won back-to-back Days of ’76 saddle bronc titles in 2005 and 2006), and hopefully I can win it one more time. It’s always been fun, the horses are good and the town is good, so it’s always a fun rodeo for me.”

Willert saddles up in Saturday night’s final performance. Arriving tonight is another former Days of ’76 champion, world No. 7 J.J. Elshere of Quinn.

“Oh, yeah, Deadwood is always special,” Elshere said en route to Burwell, Neb., for a Thursday appearance. “It’s neat not being too far from home and having a lot of friends and family being able to come to it. That, and the town itself make it a pretty neat rodeo all around.”

Elshere is hoping to bounce back tonight from a so-so outing at Cheyenne’s Frontier Days earlier in the week. Given his track record at big-time South Dakota rodeos — he’s won the Black Hills Stock Show and Range Days Rodeo titles — a good draw will most likely put Elshere back in the money again.

Oelrichs cowboy Chad Ferley — the 2006 world champion — is also expected to be competing this weekend.

Tonight’s performance begins at 7 p.m. and will be “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night.

Rodeo: Nation's Best To Converge In Deadwood

As they have for the past 87 years, the nation’s best cowboys and cowgirls will converge in Deadwood at one of the top outdoor rodeos in the country – the 88th annual Days of ’76 Rodeo, July 27-31.

The Days of ’76 started as a small celebration of Deadwood’s past. Over time, the celebration evolved to include one of the nation’s most highly-rated rodeos, which has been honored by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association more than 10 times. The PRCA has named the Days of ’76 the Small Outdoor Rodeo of the Year four times and Medium Rodeo of the Year each year since 2004. In 2007, the Days of ‘76 was also named the Badlands Circuit Rodeo of the Year.

Spectators will see more than 600 of the nation’s finest rodeo stars competing in bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. All of the competitors are PRCA card holders, and many make the national finals in Las Vegas.

Deadwood’s Days of ’76 rodeo performances will be held at 7 p.m. each night from July 29-31. There will also be a 1:30 p.m. performance on July 31. “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” day is July 30.

Days of ’76 week kicks off on July 27 with PRCA steer roping at 10 a.m. Tie-down roping, steer wrestling and team roping slack will begin at 8 a.m. July 28, with more timed event slack on July 29, also at 8 a.m.

Barrel racing slack will be held after the timed-event slack on July 29. Days of ’76 competitors will compete for the Committee’s Purse, which in 2010 will be nearly $50,000.

The mile-long historic parades will be held on July 30 at 1:30 p.m. and July 31 at 10 a.m. You can hear coverage of the parades right here on 980 AM KDSJ each day.

The rodeo is a nonprofit event made possible through sponsors, previous ticket sales and the city of Deadwood. The Days of ’76 Rodeo Committee plans and organizes the rodeo. Stay tuned to KDSJ all week July 26-31 for special reports from the Days of 76 festivities.
